An unfree mind is just like a windmill inside the bell jar!

About This Quote

This is a famous quote from the comedian Stephen Colbert. In his popular “The Colbert Report” show, Colbert used this quote in a different context, when talking about the importance of being free to think for ourselves. He said, “I love windmills, but I’m not going to be a windmill just because you put me in a bell jar.” This is a clever play on words in which the iconic image of a windmill is turned into a metaphor for the mind that is imprisoned in the cage of one’s own thoughts.
